You can get a gasket scraper at any auto parts store

You want to put a rag in a hole like this manifold so the stuff does not get in the motor :(

The KEY word is to scrape NOT gouge it can take some time ,i like to finish it off with some Scotch Brite Pads

You want to get it clean BUT not remove metal

tommays

Take the manifold off and flush it with water the best you can. Saying that, I still have been able to hear rust rattling around in them after doing that.

I use the 3M pads on a drill. eats gaskets and does not damage metal. check the surface flatness of the gasket surfaces with a straight edge and feeler guage, the corners near the bolts tend to rise.
