Cleaning Motor?

After relentless study of my linkages, I have determined that my motor is pretty grimy. I dont think it has ever been cleaned, right down to the build up of oil and leaves in the bottom of the cowling. Any suggestions on procedure? I have used the foaming gunk before, but I am not to keen on hitting 17 year old motor electronics with blasts of water. Maybe just spray with a few cans of carb cleaner?

Carb cleaner might remove paint.

ive used tool and parts cleaner with very good results.comes in a can and is under fairly good pressure.the stuff i used will not harm paint though wax will be toast.could not tell where your from, but if it happens to be canada, go to canadiantire and you will find it in the automotive section.

On small items, i use brake parts cleaner, doesn't seem to hurt the paint and almost as strong as carb cleaner :)

Re: Cleaning Motor?

The motor as built was designed to withstand being exposed to water (but obviously not submerged in it). Normally, a water wash won't hurt it. But....like you say, it is old and stuff happens.

I suggest a wash down with something like mineral spirits or kerosene, and a blow dry. Leaf blower if you don't have an air compressor.

To be responsible, you should catch the spirits and dispose of it properly. Just thought I'd toss that in. Some locations would hang you.

I like to us WD-40, a small plastic brush, compressed air, and some rags. Works well!

I use a citrus degreaser by ZEP products its very good I buy the gallon jug its very good and strong also I spray on engine hit with a bristle brush to loosen the grime Use a 2 gallon garden sprayer to rinse it with water so it is not a big force like a hose then hit it with electric leaf blower to dry it....comes out spotless stuff smells good to wash the bildge with it also 10.00 a gallon at Home Depot..put muffs on starts right up
