I want to clean out my 20hp mercury motor before heading out for the season. I thought I'd ask the experts on whats the best way to do this without causing a problem and without taking the engine off the boat? I would like to clean the carb. and all the areas surrounding areas, since these areas look a little crusty. Also which areas to avoid. Plus what kind of cleaners should I use? Any info. would be great!!!
Thanks

Re: Cleaning my motor?

Pete, I am assuming that you are talking about the inside of the cowling, outside of the carb and exterior of the engine. If so I would use Castrol super clean. Just tip the engine up and spray the inside of the bottom cowl and engine, use a small paint brush and rub the soap and residue around and rinse with warm water, in some case it will take more than one application. Don't be lulled in thinking it's not strong because it's biodegradable as it will eat lime, grease and soften some types of paint so when doing the outside of the engine do the lower parts first and when you get to the cowl don't rub to hard with a rag or it may smear the paint, if it acts like it's softening the paint rinse it quickly and the paint will harden back up. Then use a good paste wax on the outside.

Is there any area inside the motor the cleaner should not get into?

Re: Cleaning my motor?

Just don't spray it into the throat of the carb there is nothing else that it will bother.
