Cleaning outside of engine

I have a 70s model Evinrude 6hp that I am going to try to revive, I have no idea when it was last run. The first thing I would like to do is clean the engine because it is full of dirt and dust.

What is the safest way to clean without messing anything up? Can I use regular engine cleaner? Do I need to cover up the coils?

Engine cleaner and a garden hose. Been doing it for 40 years
