Re: Cleaning Pontoons

Go to any air conditioning supply house & buy a gallon of the PINK coil cleaner. Use it as described on the gallon jug & make sure you use protective clothing while appling it. Work in 4ft sections & above all do not let it dry. Use plenty of water & it will clean them like you can't believe. I've used it for years & it's the best thing ouit there to use. It's less then $25.00 a gallon.

As for the other question you aaked I am not familiar with anything other then putting carpet down on my deck. I know some people who used the vynile flloring with good success. Wish I could help but I can't on this subject.

I'm going to use Crete Shield on my deck,it is an epoxy coating that has color flakes and a nonskid additive. It's used mostly for garage floors but can be use on clean wood surfaces[wood must be in good condition] and gives a waterproof nonskid surface. Sorry, post this in the wrong place!

Re: Cleaning Pontoons

I am going to try the pink coil cleaner. I just tried a toon cleaner a gal from ebay used as directed and it did nothing. Heres the pic they are pretty tarnished from staying in the water for several tears in a boat slip from prior owner. Any other suggestions..

Also went with carpet for the floor

Re: Cleaning Pontoons

Cheapest route is muriatic acid, diluted of course. Many boat shops use it to clean pontoons. I used it on our old pontoon boat and it worked great but you need to wear a breathing mask and gloves. It only needs to sit on the surface for a minute or two before it's rinsed off. Also the pontoon needs to be put on blocks to keep the trailer from getting damaged from it. Also be aware of the surface your working above and keep it watered down. It will kill grass too.

Another option if it's just oxidized and not so much calcium and algae build up is to use Toon-Brite, it's not the cheapest but it really does make the toons shine.

Re: Cleaning Pontoons

Went to the local Grainger looking for Pink cleaner ? not in stock. What was in stock was some thing called Blue. What do I know about colors. Salesman said it would do the job. Well, I followed the directions except for the one that suggest wearing rubber glove. Did one heck of a job on the hands.

Blue was sprayed on the toons and after the foaming 75% the summer growth was removed. I was looking for 100%.

Went to Lowes and got a gallon of muriatic acid ? no good. Went to the local boat dealer and got a boat cleaner - no good.

My first mate suggested Soft Scrub ? the stuff worked like a champ. Removed 100% of the growth.

One suggestion ? do the cleaning the day your pulling out of the water. Don?t wait five months like I did.

Re: Cleaning Pontoons

I have used the pink coil cleaner or years since I worked in the HVAC business. It WILL clean those logs very well. Mine where far worse then yours & I put in on in 4 ft sections, let it foam up & then used a water hose with a sprayer on it & mine came very clean. I did not have to scrub at all. Any grass it kills will grow back very quickly if you use it full strength. If you dilute it as directed yo will not hae any problems with it & you will be amazed at the results.

I'm also using the pink a/c coil cleaner. I diluted it down and spray it on with a quart spray bottle. It does clean very good. I think it cost around $10 or $12 for a gallon at a HVAC supplier. I believe I dilute it 4 to 1. I scrub the toon with a brown scotch brite pad while the coil cleaner has been on it for a few minutes. Shazam! What a difference. To me it leaves it with kind of an etched look which is a matt grey or silver color. I don't mind this since I'm sanding then polishing my toons anyway as they are really nasty from the previous owners leaving it in the water for a few years. Yes wear gloves and avoid the grass. Good luck.

Re: Cleaning Pontoons

Well the spray nine wasn't cutting it so I picked up some of the pink stuff (cal-brite) and HOLY WOW... been working on it for a couple days (after work) and have it half done.. I'll try and take a couple pics today.. Yes it does seem to leave it with a lighter grey (etched color) look. But thats better than the nasty scummy look...
Thank you to iboats and who ever came up with using this stuff on toons

Re: Cleaning Pontoons

We cleaned our toons last summer with Aluminex which we bought at Academy & it did an excellent job & recommended it to Rodney (gunlocators) & it worked well for him also.

Before cleaning:

after cleaning & polishing:

The polishing process is very labor intensive & time consuming even after cleaning.
