What do you use to clean the scum off the OutBoard shaft? Also, do you wax the Cowling and Shaft after cleaning? If so, what wax do you use?

My 90HP Yamaha does the same thing, like a hazing or chalking of the paint. I just use any automobile polish/wax to remove the dullness and shine it back up. It does this everytime we're in the water for a day or more. It's not a big problem so far!

Probably not the best way but I use whatever LU oil spills out on the rag when I'm filling it and wipe down the leg.

Re: Cleaning the Engine?

When cleaning your boat motor, car, truck etc. Using cleaners like engine clean, gunk etc is great if you have a really greased / caked up motor. After applying the cleaner per instructions. Let set for while, probably after warming engine up. Then using the pressure hose, get only close enough to remove the crud. You may need to reapply more cleaner if really bad. CAUTION with the pressure washer, be very careful around or near shaft seals, axle seals etc. These seals are designed to keep the lube in and it doesn't take much pressure on the outside to force water etc past the seals and into your bearings etc. Just use as little pressure as needed to do the job. This goes for alternator, generator, power steering pumps etc. Just be aware that these seals may pass high pressure water or steam and this may contamanate the lube on the inside.

Re: Cleaning the Engine?

I use walmarts supertech lubricant,it's $1.77 a can and i always use it on the shaft and the cowl after i use it in any water it makes it come out like new everytime. Also makes the grease slide right off, good stuff for cheap. After everytime i use my motor i spray the pwerhead down with it i mean the whole thing electronics and all and it shines up the powerhead nice and if there is any salt from saltwater it just cleans it right off.I spray the whole motor from the cowl to the prop and it is the best investment i have ever used. It's like wd40 but way better. All you need to do is spray it one time clean the motor good with it and after that all i do is spray it on and not wipe it down at all, just let the rest drip off and it will leave a nice gloss finish to it.When i buy motors and they look like they have been through the ringer[in other words dirty]I use this spray and it looks like a brand new motor and sells ten times faster as my pictures of the motors are like night and day. Can't hurt to try at $1.77 a can.
