I have a 1986 Sunbird. The black vinyl(?) contact paper type stuff is completely cracked and bubbled all around the console on the passenger side. I can peel it right off but the adhesive underneath is a black mess. If i could get it off i would be down to the clean white fiberglass, which would be fine with me.

Any suggestions on how to clean or polish this surface?

laquer thinner will get the glue off.

it will also clean the gellcoat......acetone will also work good but wont work as well on the glue.

all things consideded .......acetone is the miracle cleaner of gellcoat/fiberglass.

Thanks. Is the laquer thinner a Home Depot item?

Even Walmart carries it......Just a word of advice...... Buy some nitrile gloves to protect your hands. Chemicals will make a mess of you and be careful. Use adequate ventilation and hand protection :)
