I am having a problem getting the road grime off of the windshield of my truck. I have tried the usual spray bottle stuff with poor results.

What really works? Is there anything with a mild abrasive that won't scratch the windshield that will do it or is there some other miracle product?

Re: Cleaning Windshield

Try some toothpaste. It works and will not damage the windshield. Wet a cotton rag and have at it.

Tooth paste will probably work.

Straight Coca-Cola cleans a lot of things well.

To make it easier next time try waxing your windshield with Turtle Wax or something comparable.

>>>>>>>HAPPY BOATING<<<<<<<

Windshields treated with Rain-X are much easier to clean.

You can get windshield washer fluid with Rain-X in it. It helps in cleaning and when it rains.

I believe in Rain-X, too. Of course, your windshield needs to be clean to put it on, but it really makes a difference.

I have been useing "Stoners "Invisible Glass"".

This stuff has been terrific.

Don't you just love the brand, "STONERS"

Wonder what happens at that factory during the night shift?

Just clean fast, or else you will be cleaning it again.

Stuff dry's real fast, so do small areas at a time.

Buff out with clean rag afterwards for unbelievable results!

Be advised that Coca-Cola has been known to eat thru clear-coat finishes, rather quickly!

So what do I know?

I hate rainX. Its fine if you never have to use your wipers, but when you do I get streak city even with new wipers.

Waxing your windsheild is a bad idea also (IMHO) as the wipers cant make contact with the windsheild and streak badly to.

I like the GM Brand glass cleaner but it is expensive, and you have to get it at the dealer. Invisable Glass is good too, It will clean the fog you get on the inside of your windsheild from the plastics inside your car.
---------------------
A trick I learned when I used to go to car shows is to use newspaper (black and white, no color)instead of towels. I thought it's bull**** but I tried it. Works! You get no streaking and the newspaper is just abraisave(sp) enough to clean some tough stuff. Try it.

If it's real bad, use some '0000' steel wool. It won't scratch and takes off all the grime. Be sure to blow off the wool dust befroe you wash.

I use the scrubby side of of those kitchen sponges at least once a week on my work truck because it gets so much grime and bug guts. I spray liberally with simple green, scrub with the rough side of the scrubby sponge. Works great with minimal effort and no damage to the windshield.

I put some comet on a wet sponge and go at it. I just be careful not to get any on the paint.

One warning about (after cleaning) using straight RainX. If you have military stickers like ours or student or company parking stickers it will melt them! Found out the hard way :(
Have a friend who dumps rainx in with his regular windshield wash and it works just fine and doesnt melt his post stickers.

Quote
"A trick I learned when I used to go to car shows is to use newspaper (black and white, no color)instead of towels."

Yup been doing that for years on the house windows. DUH! Never thought about using them on car windows :( Good idea :)

Re: Cleaning Windshield

Ever hear of "love bugs"?
Down here in Florida in February-March, we get these black,slow-flying insects, also called "blind mosquitoes", that find a mate, 'connect' and search out windshields ,Radiators, and motorcylist's teeth to commit double-suicide on.
They are quite prolific when swarming two-by-two.
The only way I've found to remove them, especially since they are allways dried-out by the time you get to a gas station, is to spray the entire area with lots of WD40. Completely saturate the little rascals...
Then wait about 5-10minutes, and wash-off the WD40 with Dawn (original formula) on a wrung-out rag. Then buff-dry with newspaper or handi-wypes.
But the rest of the year, we use straight window cleaner and it werks fine.

Ahhh, the love bugs, although we called them by an alternate four letter word bugs. When I was stationed at Ft Stewart Ga, those things were everywhere. I was convinced it was part of some conspiracy to ensure that my truck never stayed clean.

(still relates to sex) :D
Comming home one night after dinner at a friends house in NC while in the 82nd Airborne it started raining and all the locals started pulling off the country road. I remarked to my childrens mother, "What a bunch of Whimps" haha two minutes later we couldnt find the edge of the road! Live and learn! :)
That was in 1972

edit for spelling AGAIN! :)

Re: Cleaning Windshield

I'd be afraid the abrasive in Comet would damage the glass. Softscrub, maybe? Straight Windex (not generic)works great for me on glass. Only exception might be fresh tar from new pavement work, but I try to stay far enough back from whoever is ahead so as to not get it on the windshield. Just NEVER EVER put it on plastic windshields- not even once! You won't notice the damage for a year or two, but it WILL happen!

Years ago I had a guy who had some bucks and a big attitude insist I remove some exhaust stains from the belly of his big twin engine plane with comet or ajax. I politely told him no sir, would wreck his expensive paint, please wait until we got the right chemical back in stock. He chews me out royal, so I gladly followed his orders after my boss grinned and said go ahead. His next stains became permanent! The gloss was gone in the area scrubbed, paint now porous. Got what he asked for and deserved!

Re: Cleaning Windshield

The first car that my wife and I bought after we were married was a 86 Buick Regal Limited and the owners manual suggested using Bon Ami to clean the windshield. I just have used comet or ajax though. I had never had a problem with it but I always apply to the sponge and not the windshield and go easy until it all 'melts' and it works great.
