So, I am watching a car show and they are rebuilding/customizing a pickup truck.
Installing a wooden bed, they poly-ed the wood and then spayed it with several coats auto clear coat.

Has anyone here had any experience with this? Will it hold up??

Re: Clear coat??

From your definition of "wood" its kinda hard to tell..

Will the wood hold up..or the poly ..or the auto clear..

What wood..what poly and what clear lol..

NO..it wont hold in a marine enviroment .. or a well used salt/sand highway environment..

Yes. It will hold if kept in a garage and only take it out for those "cruises in the summer" type things...

Re: Clear coat??

I believe they were using Oak planks, plain old minwax poly stain, and I do not think the clear was specified other than multiple coats.

I had never heard of such a thing.

I don't reckon it would be good for a sole or a hull, but for a finish on trim and such I was intrigued by the idea.

Well if there is no product mentioned..and you think its minwax stain ( not a varnish ) then who could possibly answer your question of will it hold up ??

You think it oak..

Are you working with oak ?

what is Your question m8.. we will be happy to answer..

Give specifics..I dont care what someone else might have used..what are you using and what are you wanting...

Re: Clear coat??

YD, we did not seem to be connecting so I went to the rest of the Internet. ( Thanks for trying!)

It seems some folks are using auto clear over varnish and epoxy for boats and exterior house doors. urethane was preferred. I did not find a reference to poly.

From what I could tell,, it seems the folks who have actually tried it on boats were happy with it.

I happen to have a bit of both left over from other projects, if I can find a warm place to spray I might cover some scrap and toss it out into the back yard for a couple months for a personal test.
