So the last time my 1977 55hp Evinrude was run was to winterize it. I think it was probably November. My neighbor works at a marina and offered to fog it out and wrap it for me for free. How could I pass it up?

Seemed to be running fine while he did the fogging etc....he told me he somehow started the engine with no key needed since it was older and he connected to bolts to make the circuit to the starter, done. I knew this could work in certain older engines so didn't think anything of it. In any case it was running fine then shut off, gas treated, etc for the winter

Flas forward to today. I unwrap it, get the gas flowing and pop the key in. Turn the key and hear a click in the engine (or at least it sounded that's where it was...maybe near the powerpack but hard to tell.) Every time I turn the key it "clicks" but does not turn over at all. (By the way the engine has newer coils and a REALLY new starter)

I realized I never charged the battery but when i checked the voltage it was 12+v. We hooked it up to my truck via jumper cables and gave it a few minutes. When I turned the key I heard the same click but no turn over. I tried again and I thought I heard a click or a pop and a very little puff of smoke came from the negative post area of the battery. I thought maybe the jumpers sparked or something....not sure. But then there was not even a click after that when I turned the key.

I hooked it up to a proper charger and let it charge until the indicator said it was charged. Still no noise when I turn the key....nothing.

So....I wonder: Did my neighbor screw it up by "jumping the coils" or whatever he did to start it in November? And in any case- does anyone know or have any idea what I need to replace/fix/do to get this thing going? It was running REALLY well last year.

I am thinking maybe the starter solenoid? Powerpack? Fuse?

Smoke from the negative post of the battery is a clue. Clean the terminals and make sure the cables are tightened securely.

NAILED IT.

Cleaned the terminals, and with a little fiddling with the choke it started. Still needs a few little things but I am not too fearful of the season's maiden voyage.
