I have a 1973 Searay SRV190, 302 mercrusier / with 888 Outdrive. I had a problem with shifting into reverse and killing the engine right away. I made an adjustment of the cable at the back of the motor and the killing problem is fixed.
Now I have a clicking or ticking noise comming from the outdrive , I am wondering if I need to adjust the cable just a little more ? The noise sounds like maybe a gear is not fully meshed. Any help would be appricated.

first - replace the cable and adjust properly.

could be clutch dog not fully engaging with rev gear, like when you "granny" shift the drive.

does it sound like when you miss a shift on a manual trans and yer buddy says "if ya can't find em, grind em"??

yes , it does sound like what you have described. I'll look into the clutch dogs. Thanks for the idea.

The clicking noise turned out to be a bad Gimbal bearing.

Ayuh,... While you're changing the gimbel bearing,...

I'm guessin' you Still need a New lower shift cable....
They don't just go out of adjustment,... They Stretch,....
Which means it's due for Replacement...
