clicking noise

I have a 2004 Evinrude 200hp. The motor runs great no problems. When got off the bay today while tieing the boat down i spun the prop and it is makeing a clicking sound while in nuetral. I put the earmuffs on it and put in gear and can't here anything. turn the motor off and spin the prop click click click. Any ideas.

shift into neutral, disconnect the shift cable and spin the prop, if the click disapears adjust the cable.

Yes, there is an adjusting wheel where the cable exits the plastic sheething.
Remove it from the trunnion block and either shorten or lengthen depending which way it shifts.
They usually start to stretch out from normal use but you can shorten it easy enough if thats the case. Use a bit of loctite on the screw when locking the cable back in the trunnion.

On mine theres a plate that covers the cable exit, remove that and you'll see the cable clamp. That bolt for the clamp is usually quite tight.
You can adjust cable length without disconnecting the cable from the shift lever on the engine.

You might want to disconnect both the cables at the engine and see if it shifts hard or stiff. It should be easy to shift with loose cables.
