Clicking starter solenoid

I am working on a '76 105Hp Chrysler and the starter does not engage when I turn the key. The solenoid gives an audible click when I turn the key. I got the Chrysler service manual today, but its really not half as helpful as my last Johnson manual as far as troubleshooting steps go. I initially thought the starter solenoid needs to be replaced but after reading up on the clicking noise here I am confused. Is the solenoid clicking a good thing or a bad thing?

Thanks!

Re: Clicking starter solenoid

Go to Engine FAQs, meddo. Troubleshooting instructions are there.

Good luck. :)

I see it answers my question in the very beginning. I've read that a dozens times too. Not sure how I missed that.

Thanks

Re: Clicking starter solenoid

Voltage measures around 7 volts on the large solenoid terminal with the key turned. According to the faq, this indicates a bad solenoid. I replaced the solenoid, but have the same behavior. I measure 7.6 volts on the large solenoid terminal with the key turned. Is it possible I got a bad part? I will try jumping the large terminals on the solenoid. Also the negative terminal on the battery looks like it needs replacing, would that be enough to cause symptoms like this?

Thanks

Re: Clicking starter solenoid

check battery and all connections. a corroded connection will only lose voltage when the electricy is moving. the more electricity that goes through it then the greater the voltage loss becomes. Everything you describe sounds like weak battery or corroded connection.

Re: Clicking starter solenoid

There are 2 large terminals on the solenoid, meddo. It is the difference between them that can indicate a bad solenoid. What results did you get on the other measurements?

Re: Clicking starter solenoid

I jumped the starter with a good battery and all I am getting is sparks. I'm guessing that means the starter is shot.

Re: Clicking starter solenoid

Certainly broke, but it may be repairable. Depends on what is wrong inside.

Good luck. :)

take it to an auto electric shop. They rebuilt mine for $35each plus tax. The local discount boat store wanted $140 and west marine wanted $180 each.

Re: Clicking starter solenoid

I can get a used one for $50 at my local marina. Having it rebuilt sounds better than buying another old starter that may die in a month.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies and tips.

Re: Clicking starter solenoid

I opened the used starter I bought and it was pretty worn down. I ended up using two to make one good one. The Chrysler is running now and I couldnt be happier.
