"clinking" noise coming from outrdrive

Hey guys....First boat, learning as I go.<br />'84 Mercruiser 5.7 (898) with what I believe to be an Alpha I outdrive. Engine runs well but when I put it into gear there is a fairly loud clunking sound that seems pretty random but more at low rpm's. It sounds like it could be coming from the foot (possibly). The sound stops and runs smooth at higher rpm's. It sounds like it could possibly just not be going into gear all the way and after some clunking, it settles. Maybe shift lever adjustment???

if this is on a trailer it sounds normal, more so if you run a SS prop."at higher rpms" can burn the impeller up by collapsing the hose, shutting off the flow, burning the impeller, and now its on the hose flow. runs great at home but overheats on the water.

Could also be the ujoints. <br />Pull the outdrive and check them.

As a matter of fact, the outdrive water pump quit after the first run yesterday. i'm not sure if it is an SS prop. In the water and on the trailer, it sounds like there is a broken motor mount but I don't notice either of them moving. Also, the temp remained stable around 160 in the water. It overheats fairly quick now but I think thats the broken water pump from yesterday.

What would I be looking for while inspecting the U-joints? Thanks

Sorry for the confusion guys, there are a couple things wrong with the boat. the drive oil level is full. I guess the outdrive pump quit at the end of the ride yesterday. I believe I have the overheating problem in check, I just have to put a new pump in tomorrow. I initially wrote to find a reason for the clunking noise when in gear. Sounds like it just isn't going into gear all the way until it clunks around a while. Thanks again, I can use all help.
