I just bought an apache model j8 on ebay. I got it running fine but when i took off the skeg plate to the lower unit i found that the gear housing was filled with water and grease. I would expect to find the 90 weight oil with water to make the melted butter type consistency. Do these lower units take grease instead of normal lower unit oil? If it does take grease, is just normal wheel bearing grease ok or does it take a special kind? Thanks in advance!!!!

Hi Pardner<br />Those L/Us run 90wt gear oil. There should be no water in it. Sounds like you need to head for the bearing house for some new seals. Try and take the old ones with you when you go. The point gap for your motor is .020. Glad to hear you got her going.
