i have a montgomery ward sea king 5 hp(at least thats what the cover says. made by clinton engine corp model # k5002106a serial # 712866 type # 60 274055 i am using 24:1 fuel/oil.. i cant get it to start and run pulled the plug and its sparking i feel compression when pulling to start. starting fluid got it to turn over and run just long enough to give me the feeling that it is not getting fuel.. i am new to all this and it is our(me and my 10 year old daughter) project to restore our river boat that came with a 40 hp but lakes around here do not allow anything bigger than 10 hp so we have this. please help us the season is soon coming to an end and she really wants to go for smallmouth. there is a needle under the bowl and another on the left side of the carb. any thought of how many turns after bottom out i have them both set to two and a half. again please help. at a later point in time i may need help on restoring boat with the 40 hp and was wondering is this a good site to obtian materials? thank you for your time

More than likely you need to go through the fuel system from tank to carb with attention to cleaning.A service manual is a must for any motor.
there are after market manuals covering many brands under 30 hp.
I got mine off ebay.Sometimes you can find one at the library.
I feel the Clinton is a poor choice for a number of reasons.Scarce parts, noisey, vibrate, under powered and unreliable.
I would sell it and put the money toward a 3,4,5,5.5,6,7.5 Evinrude/Johnson
from the early 50s to the 80s.Smooth,reliable,relatively quiet, easy to service, more powerful,a vast supply of new and used parts from dozens of vendors and BRP dealers nation wide.If your lucky you may be able to clean up the fuel system and get the Clinton to run well. I do hope you can.

spent the day on the lake yesterday thanks to your advise. i cleaned the carb float bowl and all also had to adjust venturie(can't spell well) higher and it started on the second pull. thank you for your time my daughter was so happy she caught three smallmouth nice size and a four pound largemouth(we only catch and restock never keep them). your input was invalueable to us and she told me to thank the people on iboats for telling me how to fix it you have made a memory i am sure she will keep forever

So glad the motor is working for you. Be sure that water mists out the relief holes on the leg.Motor has an air cooled power head and water cooled leg.
Pump is a weak point I would not replace unless it fails just watch carefully.

yes the water is coming out of the ports in the back it shoots out like exuast from a car. it vibrates the whole boat so our plans are to sell the motor which we should not need again as soon as we remodel the boat(new paint repair scatches in hull with marinetex and new wire all the way back to the motor plug.) we are very thankful for your help. she out fished me today..i hope this posting will help others as well. once again thankyou for your time and knowledge..i will more likely be posting the remodel of the hyrider trihull for futher input and maybe it will help others in the passion of boating and fishing or enjoying nature so they may restore the "the old boat in the field"
