Brutal advice please. My 1987 dual 225E (305s) V/Pentas have approx 600hrs. Always in fresh water. We are retiring and preparing to use boat in salt water.
1. Is it feasible/advisable/fiscally prudent to apply 1/2 system closed cooling to these units at this point?
2. Should I use "as is" until repower?
3. Does installation of system like "neutra-salt" make sense?
4. Just get anal about fresh water flush & hope for best?
5. Not retire cuz this is all going to cost too much? (That's a joke)

Thank you in advance,
ElButte

Given age and hrs, I like the use till repower idea myself, and flushing will never hurt. 'nutcase

The engines will last a LONG time with the change.
Do the whole system. Just make sure you add EXTRA sacrifical annodes and everything is hooked to them.
It also depends on the system you buy. If it introduces coolant into the manifolds. It will last a lot longer.More expensive but longer.
Then you will only have to replace the risers.J

Howdy,

Do not waste your money putting closed cooling on old engines.

The people that do it for a living indicate that any engine with more than about 100hrs and/or more than about 1 year old will have enough rust sloughing off inside the block, and manifolds to eventually clog your heat exchanger.

Your engines are over 20 years old. You're FAR better off running it as is and start looking for and acquiring replacement long-block 350's NOW.

Put "full system" closed cooling on them!

Cheers,
