Well I'm about to take on a project that I may or may not be cut out for. I've got an 81 Wellcraft v20 center console. The deck has a few soft spots and the stern is starting to get weak. If the 20" motor wasn't locked up I'd use the boat, but I guess its as good a time as any to make it the way I want it. I plan to close the stern in put a bracket on it and a 30" motor. I'm searching through old posts, but any and all advice is welcomed. When I get started I'll take pics. Thanks, Mike

Re: Closing in the stern

check the transom to make sure its strong enough for the longer shaft motor...

i dont see the benefit of a longer shaft.......i mean, one over the other.....

but as long as the transom is strong enough you can do whatever you want....

read the compleated projects forum and search the word splash well

cheers

remember you are changing the center of gravity.

Re: Closing in the stern

My reason for the 30" motor is mostly to keep the powerhead out of the salt water when backing and stopping. Do you think the center of gravity will be an issue. The cog is goining to change throughout the boat. I'm building a new console thats going to be heavier and debating on weather to use something solid on the t top.(fiberglass, starboard, or pvc) How should I strengthen the stern? Metal L brackets tied to the stringers? I plan to make fish boxes in the stern as well making the washboad about 12" so I guess that will strengthen it some.

Re: Closing in the stern

first of all.....lets get the terminoligy correct....the stern.....is the transom....

the transom can be strengthend by a number of ways.....

the best way.....is to rebuild it.....if your 81 ......(27 year old) transom is getting weak........search transom on this forum.......theres tons of stuff.....

adding a splash well is no problem.....you just have to be creative about fiberglassing.......

heh heh heh....see the hull extension thread about getting creative...:D

(or is that stupid?......) sorry....iboats inside joke .

what you want to do...can be done easily...no worries.
