clueless jetskier drives over spillway (video)

Shown on a local news broadcast, an amateur with a video camera caught this jetskiier speeding along right over a spillway in Lewisville TX. Watch the story intro and the video here:

I watched the video, and it doesn't surprise me that much. It seems as if drivers of PWC's are less responsible and have less regard for the boating laws.

I see this type of behavior on the lakes in my area. The PWC skippers seem to think they own the lake! It irks me when I'm anchored,and fishing a good spot, and they blow close by me causing a big wake that is not necessary.

I'm somewhat new to boat fishing, and etiquette, yet I know this is not right.

I hope the persons in the video are ok,though.
I do harbor some ill-will toward anyone stupid enough to commit such an act.
Such a person is a danger to themselves and others.
Tragic as it may be.

Looking at the video, I can see how someone wouldn't necessarily see the spillway, but there's still no excuse for what happened.

Sounds like they both survived.

Hmmm... Still amazes me that soem people dont like that you have to be 18 and pass a course to ride one of those things. Maybe they should add an IQ test.

They had on PFD's and IMO they should be reponsible for the rescue costs. What the hell were they thinking ..... ???

Wow! They almost made it. If they had realized what was happening they might have been able to ride it out. From what I saw, I'd go a little easier on them. It was even noted that the spillway was not very well marked.

Hopefully they will learn a lesson, and the jetski was destroyed beyond repair, and he will buy a boat instead. I hate jetfleas.

Kayakers and swimmers aren't always well marked either, and it sure would have been an even bigger mess and a tragedy if they had ran down another person in their carelessness.

I am sorry, but if I am taking my boat into unknown waters, the very first thing I do is LOOK AT A CHART, and familiarize myself with the layout and any hazards to navigation.

Why on earth would the same not be expected of jetski operators?

Half of the problem seems to be that jetskiers don't seem to think that they are boaters, and so they don't think they need to follow the same rules and commonsense precautions. They are more like dirt bikes for the water, and seem to attract the same kind of people...

If I'm not familiar with a particular stretch of water I take it easy. If the driver here had done the same he might not have made the evening news.

I've said it here before though, I run into a lot more ignorant behavior from boaters hauling waterskiers acting like they believe they're exempt from operating rules and regulations than I do with jetskiers.

I've launched in this lake lately and they warn every person of the dangerous debrit because of the high water levels. they shouldn't be going that fast no matter what.

It is pretty stupid to go anywhere without checking things out first!
Some people never learn...hopefully these people did learn from this

They could have just as easily died. It always pays to research a new area and this is a prime example.

I live in a neighborhood bordering Lake Lewisville and have posted several anecdotes of stupid behavior I've seen in and around this lake. That incident was surprising to me only in that it didn't happen sooner.

This is truly the nation's epicenter of PWC's being piloted by braindead mouth breathers.

Well in their defense the spillway didnt even look like it was marked.
yeah they peobably should of gone slower. i usually go recon the area I ride in at low speeds then I find where all the sand bars twists and turns rocks widgets and bat****s are then I go full bore. usually I go further away from people because i dont like anyone around me. also i go further down than most people on jet skis go. jet skiers tend to hang out around the area where they camp
