Clunk in outdrive on 3.0 OMC I/O

Just de-winterized 1989 Sylvan 3.0 I/O, Tuned it up - didn't pull the out drive but followed instructions to the letter. Runs excellant except no matter what speed I run it at I get a clunk every few seconds from the outdrive. Any ideas what might cause this before I take it to a qualified mechanic. I am a fairly good mechanic but this is the first boat I have owned with an I/O and while the engine maintenance seems simple the rest is foreign to me.

My first guess is the gearcase is jumping out of gear. Could be a cable adjustment or a more serious problem inside the gearcase.
