Clunk!

I just bought a 2005 Four Winns 180 - 19.5 ft on a single axle trailer with brakes.

Everytime I take the boat out of the water, the left wheel makes a clunking noise on each revolution. Clunk, clunk, clunk.... It does not seem to make this noise however when the boat is dry and I take off from the house to the lake.

The mechanic that performed the inspection for me told me he spun the wheels and there was no problem, and that he also greased the bearings. After the 15 mile trip to and from the water, I put my hand on the hub and there is no extreme heat. I tighted the lugs nuts to 100 lbs+. Any idea what this clunking may be?

Thanks

Re: Clunk!

Most likely it's the brake pad material absorbing a small amount of water...just enough for the pad to make contact with the drum. The drum rotates, grabs the pad, and then overcomes resistance and the springs pull the pad back into place starting the cycle over again until the pad dries and shrinks enough to get proper clearance.

One way to verify would be to take a jack with you when you goto the lake next and lift the offending wheel up immediately after pulling out ( as long as the launch is empty or you have a spot where you won't impede flow ) and turn the wheel by hand. You should be able to tell if that is what is going on.
