Got the boat running good took it out ran great with a few little items to look into please give me some tips!!!!!

1. most important, the motor or outdrive has a noise that sounds like the drive shaft is slapping some thing or kinda sounds like an exhaust leak what confuses me is it makes the noice even in nuetral when I rev it up and it also did not do it for about a half after being in the water.

2. The shifter wants to hang up in forward when trying to come to nuetral, you have to bring back the throttle hard to get it into nuetral.

Thanks to all in advance.

1. Start by checking around the exhaust manifold for a leak. I do not know how that relates to the knock, but it is a start.

2. Look for a loose or broken connection along your shift cable. This could involve removing the stern drive. Don't forget to look at the shifter itself.

Thanks for the help. Im going to put it back into the water and see if I can hear the noise again I tried with the muffs on it and could not get it to make the noise so im guess the out drive needs a load. i will let ya's know.

What type of motor and drive would be useful.

1990 4.3 omc. I had the girl friend steer the boat while i had my head in the egine bay and i revved it up and down to hear the noise better it sounds like it is in the valve train. any ideas there? Im gonna put some BG oil treatment in the motor.
