clutch dog problem?

I have a 1957 35hp big twin evinrude sn#25930-08866 that will jump out of gear when I lift the throttle. It stays in gear during acceleration and wide open throttle, but when I let off the throttle it pops out of gear.
Also, my gearshifter will not fully engage into forward or reverse. I have to walk to the motor and move it the rest of the way with my hand. It is like the handle on the controller does not travel far enough both forwards and backwards.
Is there an adjustment to fix this? If the clutch dog is the culprit, does anyone know a source for these?

nigelbear

I dont think the clutch dog is the problem as first sign of a worn dog is jumping out at wot. Your problem more likely sounds like wear in your remote control. Get that fixed before you run your motor more, as jumping in and out of gear REALLY hurts the clutch dog and forward gear. The remote should turn the shifter arm all the way into forward gear. Does the cables move smooth ?

Re: clutch dog problem?

They move smoothly and I have tried several different cables. It is like the remote slot isn't long enough to fully engage the gear when the handle is pushed forward or backwards. I will try one of the other remotes I have and see if that helps. I have unhooked that part and I take along a person to help shift gears, but that really cuts into the time I can go fishing, having to find another person and all.

pops out of gear @ 1/2 to full throttle,

what a interesting topic, just did a shakedown cruse, first time on the water this year (2 1/2 mo behind schedule) and anyway, motor kicks outta forward gear from half to full throttle and goes into neutral, scares the S*** outta me when it does (allso the passengers) and I have to hold down on the shifter lever and apply light pressure to keep it in gear, used bunjee cord and creativity to keep it in gear and was able to continued the vacation with a fully funtioning motor (hence the boat was in the water instead of on the trailer @ the campground),the pressure on that shifter lever is 2lbs max,not like I am going to bend or break with that bunjee cord straining with a 'load' but I am not fully comfortable with a quick fix.

I have read on the post on this subject,I dont know S*** on boat motor,I can do plugs and grease gun but I dont know enuf to tear that thing apart (no manual - I can rebuild older V-8's so I got some smarts on the theory of mechanics and stuff ...lol)

looks like the shifter goes under the carb area & I dont want to "create" more problems with out more tech data or info from everyone on this forum who is not on the water this weekend,
oh yeah,
any body got a repair manual for a 1979 evinrude 15hp long shaft?

'Slamin Salmon' season is here !!!

Peace
