I knew I needed a new clutch dog for my 1954 10HP Johnson, so a couple of months ago I looked up the part and ordered one on eBay. It was NOS (New Old Stock), in the box. I looked at it when it got here, and it looked right, so I thought nothing of it.

I couldn't get to install it until a few days ago. When I did, imagine my surprise when it didn't fit. Oh, it was close, VERY close, but it didn't have the right number of teeth in the spline in the center. It's one less. It's the wrong part.

I don't fault the seller on eBay. It sure looked like what was on the box to me, and probably to him as well. It's been two months, so I have no recourse but to just eat the loss myself. Even if I could do something, I doubt that I would. I believe there was good faith on both sides. I just got caught in an honest mistake that probably happened years ago.

So I went back to eBay once again, and ordered another NOS part. (Happened to be a different seller) It arrived yesterday. That one fits.

Buying stuff on e-bay is often like buying a Pig in a Poke. In addition, throw in a lot of people who have no idea what they are selling

When you are talk parts for mechanical things, similar parts an look like what you need until you actually get it in hand. Then slight differences show up. It is part of the Murphy's Law syndrome. Glad you did get teh correct one.

You should resell it on EBay and list it as the part it actually is. You have no idea who else is looking for that particular part for their setup. JMHO
