Hello, thx for your help. Lokking at buy a 1998 evinrude 90hp ocean pro. I went out to day on boat and the motor had not been started since december o5. Motor started right up and put it in reverse and gears didn't mesh very well. So put gear back in neutral then put in gear for forward and same thing gear not meshing well. Tried this several times and a couple times it went into reverse perfectly and same thing going into forward. Runnig forward wide open no promblem and backing up in reverse no problem.

The fellow said he took it to a mechanic and the mechanic lubed the hell out of the SHAFT and said wait a few minutes for lube to drip down shaft. They started it and it shifted fine then put boat in water and no more problems. Mechanic said that sometime just setting awhile it loses its lube and perhaps a little corrosion sets in causing shifting problems and gears not meshing.

Now i am not a marine mechanic but I thought drive shaft entered lower unit via SEALS, so how does one lube the shaft that will help gears mesh for forward and reverse when gears are encases in the foot with fear oil?? Thx for your help.

You need a new parts changer / oil adder.

First, remove the shift cable and try it by hand. I'd almost bet it's fine.

The guy who worked on it obviously wasnt an outboard mechanic. Sounds more like a parts changer. And to spray oil all over the place and hope it soaks in somewhere is kinda crazy.

Dhadley,
perhaps you are right but then again somehow it is working properly, guess i will know more when I go and check it out again. Perhaps the fellow trying to explain what the man did to the motor gave a poor description. I thought maybe it was the clutch dog but the fellow working on it said if the clutch dog was going out then the unit would tend to jump gear. The problem was not wanting to engage gear. Personally I think the fellow might have changed out polluted lower unit gear oil providing better lube but then again who knows. Anything you think I should pay particular attention to when I go to look at motor again? thx

Re: Clutch dog verses lube??

Thx Jim for your reply,

Tried to change gears several ways even with the motor turned to different directions. Initially I thought maybe rps were too high but that was not the case. It kind of worked intermittantly but mostly just wouldn't mesh.

It's wierd and even wierder is the explanation I got about mechanic lubeing shaft? I wonder which shaft?? I asked if they found polluted gear case oil, maybe bad o- rings allowing water in gear case but he said oil was okay. Well, its working now they said without any problem engageing forward or reverse. Oh i forgot, with motor off and in neutral you could hear a slight click when you turned the prop.???

thx again for reply
