Hi Folks,
I'm in a bit of a tight and need some direction. Last week I bought a new clutch dog for my '58 Evinrude, 18 HP. The part number (305191) is correct. However, there are 19 splines on the dog and 18 on the prop shaft. I don't think it will work this way. When did Evinrude make the change, and what the hell do I do now!!
Butch

Wont the people you got it from help you out?
Seems like they would know what is going on.
Maybe someone changed the prop shaft for a 15 hp
or maybe the whole lower unit.
I dont know if it would even fit but maybe something like that.
On some of those motors you could reverse the dog so the worn part would operate on the reverse gear.Where wear is not so critical.

Spike,
Thanks for the reply. The people I bought it from will probably tell me it's the right part number and that's all they can do. Seems like they don't care too much for old motors. I'd not thought about some prevous owner swapping lower units, guess it's possible.
Butch

Just one question, does your prop shaft have a hole through it for detent bals and spring? If so, it has been changed. I believe the newer shafts had fewer splines and the detent hole.

Get back with us on that. I will count some splines in the morning and try to help you out. I have about 30 different prop shafts on the shelf.

Hey Boatman,
Thnaks for the help. This prop shaft has one hole in it about 3/4 inch toward the prop from the outside of the propshaft seal.
Butch
