Welcome to the world of clymer manuals...I'm not joking either. I ran into the same issue while adjusting a timing chain tensioner on a Kawasaki 900cc mcy. They get it 99% right but the 1% is a killer.

Re: clymer book wrong ?

After checking further ive found that my stator is out...AGAIN :( makes 3 stators for a handfull of running hours the tech changed my flywheel last spring, ran for an hour then burned up the stator. i replaced stator ran it for a few hours and it crapped out again, new tech replaced switch box, burned out out that one instantly he told me, then he,he found the staor was bad and had a loose magnet on flywheel so he epoxyed back on and replaced the switchbox and stator. since then ive been starting on the muffs once a week till warm weather came to take out to lake test it, went last week was too windy but ran in and out of the cove... seemed to run fine until i was putting around waitin for the trailer when it stalled, restarted easy enough and would idle but had no power, and would die when i tried to gun it.
after letting it idle for a while it seemed to fix it's self and i gunned it up onto the trailer, meanwhile the last few days i go out and run it on the hose and still sounds kinda rough so i figure since my charging windings are gone that soon the rest of the stator will go out .

So AAANYWAAY if u look at my previouse posts from way back u can see i own the boat from hell ... and finally my question is why is the staor going out so fast and often? iam afraid to replace it only to waste 200 bucks for a few hours of run time. sorry for the long winded post, any help is greatly appreciated and i thank u in adavance :)

Re: clymer book wrong ?

dude the polarity of the battery in your meter is different from the test method. it happens.
there is usually a disclaimer in the tech manual about it. some meters use the - lead on the read and some use the battery + lead on the red. it makes a big difference when testing diodes.
what part of the stator is burning out? is it the battery charge coils the low or high speed charge coils. almost sounds like something is not grounded.
good luck and keep posting

Re: clymer book wrong ?

Thanks for the reply Rodbolt i assumed that was the case and the test worked fine when i swapped the leads, so i am certain the rectifier is good then i checked the leads from the stator to the rectifier and there was continuity to ground on each lead , also i had checked battery with engin off had 12 volts and with engin running was no change, also my tachometer still not working so iam sure the charger windings are out. if tomarrow is a calm day i may take it out and run on the lake for a while to see if the stator is going to fail ( break it then fix it? )do think this is a good plan ? lol u the flywheel is not the exact same as the original but according to tech was a used one that should work.

Be sure and keep us up to date on what's happenin' with your engine. I'm curious and I'm sure some others are to as to why tha thang keeps eatin' stators 'stead ah taters(snort).

c/6
Hooty
