CMC PT130 Wont Trim while Underway?

I've got a 72 Sidewinder 18SS. And a NON TILT/TRIM 76 Merc 1150 that I just rebuilt. I had gotten a CMC PT130 trim unit to use on it when I bought the used motor. Now that all is said and done when I took her out the first time I noticed that I couldn't get the motor to trim up while underway.

It will trim while coasting or with no throttle in Neutral, but after getting up on plane I cannot trim her anymore. I have to get off the throttle and trim it then re-apply. This is really annoying...

Anyone got any clues? It trims just fine when out of the water all the way up to 90degrees.

the CMC PT130 only has 20 degrees of trim the other 70 degrees is tilt. The unit should be able to trim the motor slightly up while the motor is running at power but it will not be able to lift the motor up out of the water.

IT trims fine out of the water or without being underway.

It will not slightly lift the motor up while under power. It just holds its place. I'll try and confirm it again, but I'm 95% positive that the trim angle is not changing while under power in the up direction. It will trim DOWN, but not UP.

if the motor will not lift 20 degrees from fully retracted then there may be a problem. I would look at the manual for the cmc and see if they have a trouble shooting guide. On outboards they have extra rams to over come the force of the motor pushing the boat to trim out.

There is nothing in the CMC troubleshooting manual that addresses my issue.
It will lift 20degrees +, just not when underway.

Also, do you or anyone happen to know why it "limits" as you described when underway?

see page 6 diagram 1 the unit is designed to go from -3 degrees to +17 degrees while under way. So with the motor on the trailer does the motor go to -3 degrees or is there a conflict with a bolt or something that is stopping the motor from going that far. The only advice they give you is that a lack of power due to a low battery or other problem that is causing the pump to lack the power to lift the motor against the force the motor is applying to the trim unit while under power

On the trailer functions fine. When tucked in at -3 and pressing the up button, will trim completely up and to 90 degrees. Push down button will trim back down to -3.

When on water and in gear at approx 3000rpm (25mph or so) and pressing the up button, nothing happens.

Come to complete stop with motor running idling at 900rpm (coasting in gear) can trim up just fine.

When on water and in gear at approx 3000rpm (25mph or so) and already started with 5degrees positive trim, I can trim DOWN just fine! Just no UP while underway at any speed.

if the unit is under warrantee then I would call the company. The other option is to test the wiring to make sure you have no more than 1 volt drop at the trim unit while its under power which is not going to be a easy test.
