I just tripped across this great PDF file published by the Coast Guard. This is the standard for Backyard Builders. Ton's of great information and a few formulas that will have you rolling your eyes.

It is good and worth reading.

For UNKNOWN REASONS...... The new "improved" software will not allow this link to appear in full. SO>>>>> Cut and paste this and take the spaces out of the words boat water. When those two words are together the spell a bad word for this forum......

Re: Coast Guard Rules

Here is a link to the Coast Guard's "Boatbuilder's Handbook".
http://www.uscgboating.org/safety/boatbuilder/index.htm
Since they sometimes move it, it can also be found by going to http://www.uscgboating.org and typing 'boatbuilders handbook' in the search box.

This appears to be more in depth than the pdf above, and includes things like basic wiring diagrams.

Re: Coast Guard Rules

I found this site http://www.boat-ed.com/ very helpful when I purchased my first boat. It has all the laws for each state & provides a wealth of information. They have an official test you take, but you have to pay for it (I just used the practice exam). Even though I've boated many times off & on while growing up I read up quite a bit before taking my family out for the first time & it definitely gave me a better understanding.
