I have a tank with liquid in it with a right angled fill pipe. Last year purchased 1/16 stainless wire rope and added a small weight and coated it with chalk and with great pains was just able to tell the liquid height. The problem was it's hard to see the chalk and it didn't adhere well to the wire. Wondering if someone has any ideas what I could coat the s/s rope with that would adhere better and give some contrast that would show the height better.

If you have access to the side of the tank, tapping and listening to the sound will tell you.

And what Grub asked.

If you don't have access to sides of tank use the weight on the SS rope to determine depth of tank. Then take a plastic fishing bobber on a light line to tell you height of liquid. Then compare the two side by side. If outside of tank is accessible just hold the line and bobber beside it. Don't forget to account for length of filler neck.

I assume you are testing for height of fuel? I would expect chalk to get into the filter and help clog it. What about substituting a white string for the SS wire and read the wet discoloration on the string?

Kolor Kut (and others) makes gauging paste for a number of liquids. They change color when in contact with Fuel, Water, etc. and are used to accurately gauge large tanks (also to detect water in fuel tanks).
