I'm looking at a '92 Cobalt 222. Any comments on this boat or Cobalts in general would be appreciated.

Also, in my 40 years of owning boats, I've never had any experience with the Volvo/Penta counter-rotating prop outdrive. Anyone have any comments there?

Appreciate the help.

Re: Cobalt 222

i think any boat will only be as good as the maintenance performed on it...but I know Cobalt boats are known for their quality. As for the VP duoprop dirve...I have the same one. From my research it is one of the better built drives and it performs very well with my 5.8 engine on a 23 foot cuddy.

Re: Cobalt 222

Cobalts, in general, are about the cream of the crop for runabouts. However, like lrlima mentioned, a boat is only as good as the maintenance that was done on it. Keep in mind that Cobalt is almost 20 years old now, so there are bound to be things that need to be replaced or fixed. Check the transom and floor for wood rot (Cobalt didn't start going all-composite until sometime in the 00's I believe).

Other than that, the 222 was a very popular boat for Cobalt from what I've seen.

Solid boat, great drive, both hard to hurt. But again, if it's been neglected...
I'd rather put money in a ratty Cobalt than most anything else. You've got something worth fixing there.

I saw a couple of newer Cobalt's at the docks on Lake George NY a few weeks ago while we were having lunch. This lake has lotsa money and many Cobalt's.

The newer ones anyway are Spectacular!

Even if yours is older it's still a Cobalt!

Check this baby out. This one would look excellent in my garage:

Probably around $100k new. Even some of the older ones (like 1990) are still commanding over 30k

Go for it, if you've got it flaunt it :D

Note: you should ask this question in the Cobalt forum as maybe some owners have had experience with the model you are looking at:

Re: Cobalt 222

Thanks, I did just now post this on the Colbalt board. The one I'm looking at isn't dressed as fine as the one in your link.

I kinda know what to look for. One of my last boats was an Imperial Cuddy. No offense to anyone but you couldn't give me another Imperial. Even taking good care of it I had to replace the floor and engine mounts at about 14 years. At 19 years, the transom started disintegrating. The 470 (170 hp) Mercruser still ran great.

I've got a fleet already, 24 ft. Plabouy, 14 ft. Starcraft fishing boat, 17' Grumman canoe and a little peddle boat. The Cobalt will be a big tubing boat and something to take to the St Lawrence and Lake Onterio.
