The anode right above the prop has the head of the bolt broken off. It is just rattling around and I can't get it off. Is it possible to melt it off with a propane torch?

I Doubt a Propane Torch would be Hot enough,.....

How about Drilling it Full of Holes,+ Breaking it Up,..??.....

Why does it have to come off?

I'd stay away from heat,as the zinc fumes could be bad for you.If you drop the gearcase, you can drill the bolt out from the topside.

It has to come off because it isn't doing any good without a solid contact.

The best bet is to remove the gearcase and drill out the broken bolt from the top where it is accessable. Yep, the outdrive has to be removed before taken off the lower gearcase.

I think I'll try to drill it and get to where I can grab the bolt with a pair of needlenosed vicegrips first. Then if that doesn't work, I'll drop the lower gearcase.
Thanks for the suggestions.

If the bolt head broke off because the threads were frozen in the gearcase, needle nose vice-grips won't work. Trust me.

Make sure It's a decent drill bit because the bolt SHOULD be stainless.

Re: Cobra anode removal

I had a very similar problem. I used some wood tapered wedges available from home depot. Jammed the wedges in all around the anode to stop it from moving and drilled much of the anode material away until I could get a hacksaw blade to cut the bolt. Good luck.

Re: Cobra anode removal

The wedges sound like a good idea, but I need to replace the anode. Just cutting off the bolt won't do it. If I can't turn it with the vicegrips, then I'll drop the lower case.
