i have an 87 omc cobra, 3.0. i have not used the boat at all this year as i was busy with a home purchase. went i went to move the boat to my new home, i noticed that the l/u seemed to have leaked gear oil. it appears to be leaking in the lower half in the fin area. it appears to be recent as the oil looked fresh. what would cause the lower unit to leak when the boat is just sitting? i haven't started the boat since last fall when i winterized. last spring i tore down the drive & replaced all the seals, & the boat ran fine all summer. any ideas anyone?

Re: cobra gear oil leak

Is it leaking around the drain/fill screw? Possibly needs a new washer on it, maybe sitting in the hot sun (if yu are getting any sun this summer)caused some pressure to build up in the gearcase and pushed the lube out?

Re: cobra gear oil leak

there is a service bulletin about leaking gear oil in older cobras the lower drive shaft bearing housing was miss machined where the o'ring groove is ask a dealer to look it up for you its a rather expensive repair as the dive must be removerd and disassembled to inspect\replace part
