Cobra rebuild

I just finished rebuilding my '87 cobra outdrive, new gears upper and lower as well as bearings and cups. I do not have the gauge for the pinion bearing shim but I did get the correct backlash by trial and error shiming. The pinion gear rolling torque is 6 in. lbs but when I started it up, I have a whrrrr noise which comes from the pinion gear area. I had hoped for smooth as velvet but is there any chance this may be normal and will diminish with break in?

Thanks :)

Re: Cobra rebuild

That is because you do not have the proper pinion gear height. Even with the proper backlash and rolling torque, you have improper contact of the pinion gear and the other gear.
You MUST get the proper pinion gear height first, then you have a slight chance that trial and error shimming for backlash will work.

Re: Cobra rebuild

Thanks Don, much appreciated. I will disassemble and take the pinion and yoke assemblies to the pros for proper measurement.

Thanks again!
