Cobra to SX conversion question

I have completed the replacement of an 1989 Cobra outdrive with a 1995 Cobra SX outdrive in a 1989 21' Bayliner Ciera Sunbridge. The only item left to complete is the connection of the new shift cable to the shifter/throttle helm assembly. My question is: Does the SX (either OMC or Volve) outdrive shift the same as the Cobra as regards to cable movement (push/pull) related to forward/reverse?

Thanks Don. It was your original thread about a similar conversion a few years ago that convinced me I could do this job. I think yours was a King Cobra to Volvo SX.

It was a King Cobra, but not the KC with the cone clutch. It was just the regular Cobra with a dog clutch and the word King stuck on for some reason. There is no conversion for the cone clutch OMC King Cobra.

The first one called "King" Cobra was the only drive in 1987, 88, 89 (that held 108oz of oil) that was bolted on the back of the 460.

In 1990, they went to the Cone Clutch drive for the 460 and 454 (and called it and others "king")

(I am SO GLAD I got rid of that thing.......):p

Re: Cobra to SX conversion question

My replacement is an OMC Cobra. It has the hump and no water pump. I believe it was made during the transition to Volvo. I have used the Volvo (shorter)trim cylinders. I'm anxious to test it and get it in the water but it'll have to wait till after July 4 due to work commitments.

I think you have the "good" one.......

The Cone clutch Cobra with the integral (on the back) raw water pump appears to be the "Interim" cone-clutch drive. (which is no longer well supported or supported at all........you cannot even buy impellers for them unless you find new, old-stock parts sitting on a shelf someplace....... (I think 1995 was the last year for them on the back of the 454)

You can look all this stuff up by comparing parts diagrams at http://epc.brp.com

It's amazing how many VERY different models were sold during this time.....

If you bought a 1994 boat with an OMC V-8, you could end up with a 1993 engine and dog-clutch drive............

Or a 1994 engine and a cone clutch drive with the raw water pump on the drive.......

OR a 94 engine and a cone clutch drive with the raw pump ON the engine! (probably the most desired since this was most probably an SX!!!)

I think they started calling them Cobra SX when they went to the engine mounted raw water pump (and started having internal parts commonality with Volvo SX)

Consider yourself lucky you don't have the cone clutch drive with the integral raw water pump!!
