I don't know much about the OMC and Volvo drives and this board has a lot of knowledge in that department.

A friend has a '87-'89 Marlin with a 4 cylinder OMC cobra drive(with dog clutch).

He hydro'd the engine and want to re-power with an 4.3 from another boat with a Volvo drive('92).

I told him I didn't think the Volvo/OMC compatibility went that far back to the '87-'89 Cobra.

Will it work or do I have to fill in the transom and re-do the transom cut-out?

if its the SX drive the cut out is the same.
if its the swedish 280 or 290 style the cutout is very different.

Re: Cobra to volvo swap?

The cutouts are different. I have no idea what outdrive and transom shield was used in 92, Volvo goes by model numbers not year. But if it's a 290 or newer the cutout would be bigger than the OMC. You can see how the X diminsions would center the cutouts in the overlay of Volvo cutouts below.
NOTE: the SX/DP-S drive has the same cutout as the OMC and Mercruiser.

Re: Cobra to volvo swap?

I don't know what Volvo model it is. Hopefully I can get a look at it tomorrow and take measurements.

The cobra(4 cylinder) looked short/stubby compared to the Volvo So that's another issue I'll have to take measurements on.

The idea is to hopefully bolt the Volvo transom assembly in place of the OMC Cobra drive and get a Volvo with a 4.3
