My water pump output shaft was dumping water into the lower unit. I discovered that the seal is almost impossible to get a seal.
The seal is behind the cover plate however if you can't get the plate off or on need a quick fix you can pull the water pump and back pump plate. you will see the output shaft housing and shaft has an area that an o ring could fit in. i went to a oilfield supply and got some graphite rope packing it is used in pumps as a seal 5/16. by 4 inches about 2 bucks you will be packing this rope in between. the shaft and the housing sleeve. wrap in the same direction as rotation. the rope will fit tight but that is ok it is full of graphite. so it will bnot burn up. best to pack an end in the keeping tension. on the rope work around the shaft till you fill the hole up. try to end your wrap just at your start. the water pump back plate will act as an packing agent and hold the packing in. assemble the pump as normal.
my seal was completely. shot after packing the shaft i ran on the lake for over 4 hours no leaks. this material is made for this. it is not rope. you can find it in oilfield. or pump supply. companies the graphite. is what i suggest you don't have to grease it
