Yes, I seem to recall that the powerhead does need to come off, to undo the shift linkage. The same holds true for the 5 1/2's. Typically, most motors will have a small obround plate in the lower part of the motor leg, just above the water pump assembly, but that is on 10hps and larger. The smaller motors got the 2 piece shift rods a little later than yours.

As far as the flywheel goes, you'll need a good puller. Be careful about the top stud that you don't damage the threads, because that will ruin your afternoon.

The triangular cover you are speaking of is a muffler. Take it off to access the screw above it. You can usually reuse that gasket. Even if it leaks real badly, the worst that can happen is a noisy, messy exhaust.

Always use a suitable puller on the flywheel, one that goes in the 3 bolt holes in the flywheel. And always use a torque wrench to reinstall it. Torque is 40-45 ft/lbs on that one.

If you can't get the proper puller and torque wrench, keep your hands off it.

well i got the right puller but i still cant get it off the flywheel keeps spinning when i try to tighten the center bolt on the puller. and now i have another problem. i can't get the lower end fill and drain oil bolt out. it is really stuck. i am going to try to heat it up with a torch and mabe that will loosen it. if there is a NO NO about this let me know. i am not going to try this until mon or tue. thanks for the help

yea, make sure that you have a screw driver that fits the slots on those drain plugs, as much as possible, because they will booger up on you. They usually have a plastic washer that compresses , so they shouldn't be too tight.

NO NO. It isn't stuck. Read this:

You need a strap wrench to hold the flywheel. You can make your own with a piece of 2 x 2 lumber and a nylon web strap. Shown in tightening mode. Flip it over for loosening mode.
