Anyone have a good idea on how to test for ignition coil flashover on an outboard? I think the insulation on one of my 6 coils breaking down. Could i attach one end of a wire to the block and hold the other end with insulated pliers and move it over the coils while the engine was idleing and look for a spark?

Thanks
Reddog

Re: coil flashover

Those ignition systems carry up to 300VAC primary and some 45,000 in secondary, be carefull. Do a good visual - often you can see the arc in the right light. Otherwise I would recommend pulling them and testing on a wood bench top.
Last time I did this I didn't and got nailed - now I can cancel my viagra perscription (and before anyone asks, no I wasn't testing for spark with my willy).
