I couldn't find anything on how to set this gap. There's about .040" of wiggle room on the screws. Obviously, too far away and no pickup, too close and it'll rub. On a Briggs and Stratton it's set external to the flywheel via a playcard. How do you set this gap on an OMC outboard?

look under the Top Secret Files, highlighted in yellow at the beginning of the Forums, scroll down to Troubleshooting Universal Magnetos and you'll find how to set the heels of the coils in relation to the boss just below them..it's a really close tolerance, this distance, between the coil heels and flywheel...seems like a cigarette paper would almost rub it's so close

The real problem with setting the coils in relation to the magnets is that you can't use a playing card, a cigarette paper or even a feeler gauge because the flywheel cover over the coils when checking the proper setting. And so they use the bosses to set the coils... That is all you can really do to get them installed correctly... JMHO!

If you are doing this on a regular basis you might want to invest in the setting ring ( dummy flywheel ) ----Frank on here makes / sells them.---Likely cheaper than the factory tool that I use.

I just set it flush with the ground down area on the timing plate next to the coils and the engine seems to run pretty well. I hesitate to say perfect because it hasn't been on the water yet (just in the can). But it starts in less than a full pull when warm and idles great.
