I have a 1977 85hp johnson. I didn't think I had the power I used to have. Did tree mechanic spark test and no 1 not firing. Check compression==all around 145. Switched coils no 1 and no 3. Still no spark on no 1. No 3 fired both times. I am not sure what to check next. I tried to search but I guess I'm not asking the right thing. Suggestions for next step?

If you checked all wiring to the power pack on both coils and switched them and the same cylinder did not work, you will probably need a new power pack. You still need to know what damaged the power pack.

Download the Rapair troubleshooting quide. It is large, but thorough. It takes a few minutes to download but you can save it to your computer or print it. It is .pdf. Rapair Troubleshooting Guide

Just swap power packs. If the no spark problem goes to the port side.....bad pack.

Only one power pack. Any simple checks for the power pack. I would hate spending the money for the power pack just to find that it's something else.

Re: Coil not firing--suggestions?

Bought a used power pack from a dealer and put on motor. Took the boat out today and it really ran crappy--not nearly as good as before. I touched cyl. 1 and 3 and the plugs and they were not even warm. Went and bought a spark tester and all cyl. have a blue spark that easily jumps 7/16. I will probably put the old power pack on and check the spark with the tester. After that???
Thanks for your help--frusted. Tried reading the manual but seems like I need another meter for some tests.
