coil ohm checks??

I read on E-how that between the two coil wires you should have .02 to.04 ohms and between coil ground wire and coil tower wire going to the distributer should be 8 to 11 ohms. Mine is 1.9 kohms which is 1900 ohms. Just asking and saying coil is bad right? Way too much resistance for spark to get through? Oh ya this is on one of those 1970 Johnson/evinrude 115083d that I have been reading on here are a piece of slfkj. Anyway I have also read on here that I should replace the carb linkage. How do I go about that? I am a land lubber form Cornhusker nation living in Utah and just want to go fishing LOL.

Thanks in advance for your help
Don

Re: coil ohm checks??

Which article told you 8-11ohms? That's WAY low. Cars are 4K to 20K on the secondary side (tower to ground). Yours at 2k sounds like it might still be defective, but shorted instead of opened.

Here's the eHow I found; How to Test Ignition Coils | eHow
"Note the reading from the ohmmeter--you are looking for a reading ranging from 7,500 to 11,000. Anything outside that range indicates a defective coil."

Do you have one or two coils on your engine? Can you test the other for a reference? Another test would be to simulate running the coil.
1) Disconnect the two coil wires from the side of the coil
2) Hook up the spark plug wire to a test plug. Make sure the test plug is grounded.
3) Hook 12v+ to one side/terminal of the coil.
4) Tap the other terminal with the ground wire.
Every time you remove the ground wire, the plug should spark.

Re: coil ohm checks??

I believe that article is incorrect. Perhaps the author meant to add a "K" after the "...between 8 and 11..."? But he didn't mention switching the meter to the 20k scale either.

I only have cheap meters here at home, but can give you primary and secondary resistance on those tomorrow if you want. Also, the test schematic I drew up will tell you 100% if the coil is generating spark.

Re: coil ohm checks??

I used this video when testing my coils. I'm not an expert but i think it meant 8,000-11,000 ohms (which would be 8-10 ohms on a multimeter that measures in K).

To test a coil with the above diagram I believe you need a condenser in the system.

Re: coil ohm checks??

i will just add that an Ohm meter wired up with 4T sensing gives a far more accurate reading as the common 2T sensing Ohm meters to measure any resistance

Re: coil ohm checks??

thanks to all of you this is an update. I am still trouble shooting this. for some reason there is never any time for fun one has to pay the bills LOL. anyway the coil was good so buying one was wrong. I found the problem of no spark it was the water tight conection from the pulse pack whom ever soldered it and connected it must have been worse at this than me. wiggle this connection and you get spark then no spark so me in my own way cut this plug out and wire nutted the wires togeather. whops forgot one very inportant step mark the wires or even check your diagram (dummy) anyway long story short smoked tested sensor so looking for another sensor. and me being a cheepo (so tight I squeak when I walk) finally found one for 75 bucks lucky me now just waiting and then back to the drawing board. on a side note: anyone attempting this wake up and pay attention or it will cost you like me ju
st step back relax think about it study the manual and proceed with caution. again thanks to all

not really sure what happened this is what it should be.

My goodness, what a bunch of misinformation in this thread. I don't want to offend anybody though.

No reason to be offended, would only hurt someone if you didn't speak up and let people know what is right and wrong.

Re: coil ohm checks??

by all means speak up speak your mind, I don't care if you step on anyones toes here including mine. I just want to get this engine running without costing an arm and a leg if I am doing things wrong tell me so, it already cost me a sensor because no one would speak up (no no no that is not correct) and my bad I forgot to check the ohms following manual instructions and make sure I had it wired correctly (hind sight) hopefully it won't happen again. here is another thing I am quesitoning where is the magnet for this system the trigger on mine has no magnet on it how does the sensor pick up the signal from the trigger to send it to the pulse pack to send 300 volts to the coil. or is this just a proximity switch sensing the metal spaces in the trigger. yes I am very green here but I am not stupid by no means. maybe I should not be on here if someone can't speak their mind without the fear of offending someone else. I am just asking for help or do I just do this by trial and error!!!!! please offend me as long as you are correct and I get this running. and then on to the cosmetics of this boat. am I on the right site for information or not????

Thanks
Don
