Im putting new wires and coil on 302 w/points. Has a Mallory single point distributor. Any suggestions? I dont know if its a coil with a resistor or not. I havn't seen a resistor anywhere. It's a 1975 model boat. Surely auto wires and coil will work right?

It has a resistor wire between the choke connection and the coil

So the coil is non resistor? Should I get one of those high energy coils?

Re: Coil on 302

Its a resistor coil and the resistor wire is in the wiring harness between the electric supply for the choke and the coil

So I need a resistor coil. Should I get high energy or just stock coil and wires?

I don't think a high energy coil is going to do you any good while you are running points. If you go to a Pertronix ignitor, eliminate the ballast resistor/wire then you'd be cookin with a high energy coil.

If you keep your points, you've got to keep the ballast resistor/wire so you might as well keep a stock coil.

Re: Coil on 302

Boomyal- Ok Im confused. I thought the resistor was in the coil on some models and the others which have resistors mounted outside of the coil (like mine) I guess. I normally dont buy autoparts for the boat but here It shouldnt matter. I took the coil to an autoparts store and they could not cross reference the number. So I need a coil with internal resistor or no resistor?

Re: Coil on 302

very old: external ballast resistor
old: resistance wire in the harness
new: resistor in the coil:
newer: breakerless magnetic trigger

So I need a coil with internal resistor or no resistor?
depends on the year,if you have a ballast or resistance wire in the line using a coil with an internal resistor meams you now have 2 resistors in the coil circuit.likewise ifif there is no ballast,if you use a coil that requires a external ballast you burn the coil up .
