Coil/ plug wire upgrade

I have a 1975 Johnson 75 that is in need of some TLC. It is giving me some starting problems, and some quality of spark issues too. I currently have the old style coil/ plug wire that will not allow for replacement of just the spark plug wire. The wires are permanently attached to the coils.

Can anyone advise as to an upgraded coil/ plug wire set that I will be able to replace the wires only (if need be) in the future?

Thanks !

Re: Coil/ plug wire upgrade

I have never seen one, but that doesnt mean they dont exist. The replacements will be the same way. What you can do however, if your coil is good and dont want to spend the money on the whole thing, is just get new spark plug boots. The spark plug wires rot usually from the spark plug in. THe wires will come with a fair amount of play and extra wire. If this is your case, cut your wires back, ensuring you still have enough to reach your plug, remove the last 1/8 inch or so of insulation on the wire, fold the exposed wire over, insert the new spring that comes with the boot kit, spray a little WD-40 on it to ease the assembly of the boot over the wire, its a tight fit, then slide it on. Easy as that.

Re: Coil/ plug wire upgrade

Thanks High Trim,
This is the same "jerry-rigged" motor as I spoke of last evening. Good idea, but these boots are definitely meant for walk'n. If you know what I mean.

I'm tracking down a poor spark problem, and am taking advise on upgrading my electrical system. And can use some parts hunting help!
Thanks!
