I have a 1980 9.9Hp Johnson 10RL76H. Can anyone tell me the coil impedances? The only manual I can get is the combined manual which I don't really trust.

Also what is the purpose of the cotton swab that is on the back of the charge coil and rubs against the rotor?

The engine is a 1976, not 1980. Primary res. 1.35, + or - .3 Secondary 13,500 + or - 1500. The cotton swab is an oil wick, it supplies lube to the breaker point rubbing block.

Thanks very much for the info. I got about 1.2 & 12500 so it looks ok. What about the charge coil under the flywheel? For this I got about 2.5.

Thanks for tip about the swab. What sort of oil should I put on it and how much?

Re: Coil Resistances

It should be 1.45, + or - .4 for the rope start. 2.7, +or - .7 for electric. The wick comes new in the box with each set of points, so I never oiled one. 1 or 2 drops off the tip of a tooth pick would be enough oil of your choice. " 50 - 1 ". What kind of problem are you chasing?

Re: Coil Resistances

Thanks again for the info. I haven't used the motor for a couple of years. It was a trolling motor on my tinnie, however, the kids were doing some wakeboarding so I took it off. Before I took it off I only used it a couple of times and it was running intermitently on 1 cylinder. Because it hasn't been used I am checking the basics before cranking her over. I found one of the points had high resistance. Even after filing it would go high again. I bought a replacement set (and got the wick), however, the new points are not the same as mine. Mine is one piece but the replacement seems to be similar but seems as though the post should be somewhere else. Have I got the wrong part or do I somehow have to strip bits off my old points to get it to work?

Is the number on the box 580148? It will have the two halves, a wire clip, a brass clip, and as you said, the wick.

Yes, that's it. On my existing points the lower half includes a post for the top half to mount to. The new set doesn't. How do I get this post transferred?

Re: Coil Resistances

The parts box was numbered 508148. I took them back to the shop and the guy rechecked and checked all his stock and none had post. He then spoke to a tech who agreed the points were wrong. He then flicked through some parts list from that era for no particular model. He pointed to a set which ended up being 581207 (twice the price). These look almost identical to mine except the slotted hole which is not used is at a different angle. I have not fitted them yet but I think they will fit.

The tech also said that the points when new have a coating on them and I should clean them with thinner or acetone. Does this sound right?

For the record the new points work great. The motor is running like new.
