Have you checked the points and condensers? Looked at the prices on those items. What are they made out of? Gold?

Re: coil super hot and backfiring

Check the voltage going into the coil. About the only thing that I can think of that will overheat a new coil is an overvoltage condition or a bad CDI.

Since you have a points type system, we can rule the CDI out.

Your problem can be the result of system voltage being too high.

Re: coil super hot and backfiring

Check the wire that goes from the problem coil to the points. It should be isolated from ground. Only time it will show continuity to ground is when the points closed together. If that wire is shorted to ground, then the coil will be drawing current through it continuously. Coil is designed for intermittent current/voltage flow when the points close. Also double check the voltage, like John suggested.

Cheapest price I've seen for one set of points is $23.38. Each condenser is $21.28.

Re: coil super hot and backfiring

well its like this it was an easy fix ?
My loving 10 year old boy decided to help dad and left the key on for a few minutes and thats why i lost the coil and of course the one set of points !
and for the backfireing was do to the points fried enough were they were not closing all the way and i could not see the gap !
this site is great and thanks for all the help really appreciate it !
until next time hope everyone has calm winds and great Boating !!!!!!!!:D
