found my coil is leaking so time to replace it, my question is, its a merc 470 engine, with a resistor wire, can i replace this coil with an automotive coil? if so would i still use the resistor wire? just trying to increase the spark since i have to replace it any way, if its a hassle ill just stop into worst marine if i have to. thanks for your help! as i have said before you guys are by far the best!!

Re: coil upgrade?

I suggest repalcing it with a coil that requires an external resistor wire. Basically, the same setup that you have now. There really us no benefit to these so called hotter coils with a points system that you have.

You can but would need one specific for a points system. Should you go to a internal resistor type you can eliminate the resistor wire.No real reason to go hotter, the oem systems works nicely when adjusted properly.

I would keep the external resistor. This way you have the resistor bypass at startup which essentially gives you a higher coil voltage when the voltage drops during cranking.
