Coil wire gauge? Powerpack to coil

1990 evinrude 120hp, I just bought new boots and connectors to replace the connection between the powerpack and coil because one of mine is horrid, but they came in the individual pieces and no wire and the woman at the parts counter didn't know what wire gauge I need.

I'd check the ones on there but they are too far for me to go home and check today on my lunch and i'm really hoping to avoid an extra trip ...

Any input greatly appreciated! On a side note I remember seeing the ones on the boot side of the quick disconnect being larger than on the powerpack side. Seems like this would be very bad considering the exact resistance an ignition system needs, right? Or is this just being anal?

the boots to the coil are smaller and the connector is smaller also(at least they are on my '96 88 special). They sell the smaller spark plug-like connectors at Radio Shack if you need them They are in the little drawers with the other small connectors, you have to search for them. As far as wire size I think 14 gauge is plenty but check around to be sure.

I bought 18 gauge wire and it slightly larger than the wires coming out of the powerpack but it is what had been spliced in by the shop that put it together so it's probably ok.

For anyone who searches this though, the ones coming out of the powerpack were 20 gauge.
