Re: Cold natured

These motors normally start quite easily. When were the carbs last cleaned and the idle set up.

Re: Cold natured

Check out this thread on cold starting procedure.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=225510

My 1978 85hp will start right up after a one or sometimes 2 short attempts. Make sure the bubble is squeezed tight, make sure the warm up lever is lifted.

Things you might want to check....

Check the choke plates to make sure they are closing all the way or closing period.

Check for leaky fuel lines.

Check the carbs

If you have a built in tank with an inline fuel filter check and or replace the filter.

Your welcome. If it continues to give you a hard time to start, just continue on down the list.

Another thing that may cause a hard start is the carbs being out of sync. Also make sure you are using 50 to 1 mix in your fuel.

Mine will do the same, its a 1994 J150 with optical ignition, if I bump the cold start injector a couple of times as soon as it fires up it will keep running, then I raise the throttle a bit to let it warm up at 1200rpm.
Then it will run all day without missing a beat.

Rebuilding carbs will only take you a coupe of hrs the first time.

Re: Cold natured

I have had tons of 2 stroke motorcycles and a couple outboards and 2 strokes are just cold blooded.

Everyone is so used to computers controlling everything, 10 degrees, hit the key and it starts right up but on this motor you are the computer.

Mine always hits right away, you just have to bump the choke till it is happy and wants to stay running.

Remember, the choke is only on it the key is pushed in, as soon as you let go of the key if comes off.
