Cold Start = Fine // Warm Start = Bad

Hi all - '66 9.5 Johnson question. If you have read my other posts, you know the deal...<br /><br />1. Thing sat on the boat for over a week.<br />2. Went up, FIRST PULL it started!<br /><br />Took it out for a run, came back, stopped - would not start.<br /><br />Any insight on why it starts cold but will not (just about everytime) start when warmed up and ran?<br /><br />Thanks in advance.

I don't know about '66 but my '76 had a coilpack that was weak and would break down when engine was warm. About 40.00 at the dealer.

I have a 69 6hp Johnson that acted the same way. I found my water pump was bad and the motor was over heating. Once it cooled down,I could start it again. Check to make sure you got water coming out.

Thanks for the response.<br /><br />I put in a water pump kit - and it is pumping water. When I feel it - It is warm - not "hot" to the touch.<br /><br />Could points be affected by this at all - that was going to my next swap out.

Another possibliltiy would be that the engine is running rich either from a stuck open float, misadjusted idle, or leaking fuel pump. Cold engines like rich warm engines don't. Check it out.

I have almost same problem. Did you fix your boat yet?<br />1985 20hp evinrude. Runs greats, starts cold, stops, starts again just fine.<br />But if I wait 10 minutes it won't start. So sounds like maybe carb float is sticking? How can I tell?<br />I rebuilt carb, before didn't work at all cause slow speed needle valve was shot. Should I take it apart yet again?

Did not fix mine .... yet! I am brand new to engine though.<br /><br />1. I decarbed<br />2. Water pump<br />3. Carb Kit<br />4. Adjusted points (when I did this - and let the thing run for about 15 - 20 minutes, then shut off it started right up 3 times (not in gear though)<br />5. New sparks too<br /><br />I may change my points as the last try. I got my Merc 7.5 running great so am putting less time in to the 9.5 for now - I can do that in the winter.<br /><br />Best of luck - CM

How ya doing?<br />I think you wrote the symptoms again when you intended to write the solution.<br />You wrote and ultimately it was nothing more than an engine that started fine when fully warm, startd fine when choked/cold, but was stubborn about starting "in-between".<br />We already knew that. How did you fix it??<br />I tried more throttle (Pumping throttle as I'm electric start, choke and more choke, and even starter fluid didn't get anything. But cold or right after shut down works fine. Please help

I'll try the process you mentioned this week. Will also re-check the R/F mix as per jimd.<br />Points are $12 so while I still have it out I am going to do that also -what the heck - might as well.<br /><br />Tell you what though, my back is killing me from moving the darn thing from barrel to boat!<br /><br />If this doesn't work I make it an anchor.
